SMOT.NET Mailing List Info
The SMOT.NET mailing list is an 'electronic' meeting place for members of the SMOT club. It's a self moderated mailing list, and motorcycles are the primary topic. Being a small list, we welcome any questions regarding motorcycles. You will not get flamed for asking 'What oil do you use?' or 'what tires are the best?'
List ettiquette:
We ask that posts be kept primarily to motorcycle content.
If you are replying or responding to a message, please post thoughtfully.
Remove any non-contributing text in your replies to the list. Reply to the list only if you feel everyone on the list will benefit from seeing your reply.
Forwarding a personal message from another list member to the list without the author's permission is considered poor email ettiquette.
Personal attacks on other listmembers will not be tolerated.
You may see some banter, chatter and/or behavior that seems contrary to the personal attack rule. Chances are, the posters engaged in this activity have met, ridden, or wrenched together and the prods are all in good fun. A simple rule to follow: Don't insult anyone you haven't met.
There are three ways to subscribe, use whichever you feel most comfortable
with.
Subscribe Method 1:
Send an e-mail to
smot-request@smot.net with the *SUBJECT* of
"subscribe" (without the quotes).
Subscribe Method 2:
Send an e-mail to ecartis@smot.net with the *BODY* of "subscribe smot"
(without the quotes).
At the same time, if you'd like to set yourself up for digest mode (only 1
e-mail per day with all the day's postings), add a second line of "set
smot digest" (without the quotes).
Subscribe Method 3:
Point your web browser to
www.smot.net/cgi-bin/ecartis.cgi. Follow the
on-screen directions to log in, select "smot" from the list of mailing
lists, and click "Select List". Then, click "Subscribe".
To unsubscribe, the same three methods are avaiable...
Unsubscribe Method 1:
Send an e-mail to
smot-request@smot.net with the *SUBJECT* of
"unsubscribe" (without the quotes).
Unsubscribe Method 2:
Send an e-mail to ecartis@smot.net
with the *BODY* of "unsubscribe smot"
(without the quotes).
Unsubscribe Method 3:
Point your web browser to
www.smot.net/cgi-bin/ecartis.cgi. Follow the
on-screen directions to log in, select "smot" from the list of mailing
lists, and click "Select List". Then, click "Unsubscribe".
This list is configured to be open subscription (anyone can subscribe), but
closed posting (only subscribers can post). If anyone has compelling
arguments against either of these policies, feel free to send them my
direction.
Posting to the list:
To send a message to the list, simply send an e-mail as normal to the address
smot@smot.net
Setting list options:
There are several common list options that you may wish to set or change. By
default, your options are "ACKPOST" and "ECHOPOST".
ACKPOST : You receive a confirmation e-mail for each of your posts.
ECHOPOST : You receive copies of your own posts sent to the list.
DIGEST : Instead of individual postings, you get one message each day with all of the days traffic.
DIGEST2 : You get both the digests *and* the individual postings.
If you want to set any of these options, use the format "set listname option".
To clear an option, use the format "unset listname option".
For example, to stop receiving confirmation e-mails, and to switch to digest
mode, send an e-mail to "ecartis@smot.net" with the body of:
unset smot ackpost
set smot digest
